The Creative Writing Department at UMass Boston recently caught the attention of news outlets when they hosted the first-ever Six Word Story Contest. Originally inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s winning story — “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” — the Creative Writing Department challenged students to tell a complete story with only six words.

The winning story was submitted by Sarah Hassan, a freshman at UMass Boston, and reads: “American? But what are you, really?”

I know right now many high school students like you are in the midst of the application process or maybe you’re supporting someone that is about to take that step. It can be stressful, so I encourage you to step away for a moment, read some of the other winning entries, and then share with me your own six words to describe the college admissions process. I’ll get you started:

Another application? No. A lifelong opportunity.
